Broken Dam in the Poconos

This broken dam in the Pocono Mountains is on a small lake and has fortunately not caused any flooding.

Old Glory on a Glorious Day

This view of Old Glory in the Pocono Mountains caught my eye on this very glorious day.  Brilliant, sunny and cloudless days are too rare in these parts, but we really appreciate the occasion when we do get them.

Icicle Wires

Winter is clinging to northeast Pennsylvania, and its mark can still be seen pretty much everywhere you look, such as the back of this apartment building.  I'm no electrician, but I have to think these frozen wires laden with icicles can't be good.

St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church

This glittering gold dome at the top of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church in Freeland, in the Poconos, is a real eyeball-grabbing attention getter on brilliantly clear, sunny days.

Phillip H. Sheridan Monument Mystery

This monument to General Phillip H. Sheridan at the Lackawanna County Courthouse Square is a puzzle to me.  What connection might General Sheridan have with Scranton?  I don't think he ever lived here or had family from the area, and I don't know that he ever even passed through.  An internet search of numerous historical sites did not provide me with an answer.

Art, Jewelry, Tattoos and Pie

Check the fine print on the Electric City Tattoo Convention posters and you will see there was a real variety of events and entertainment:  Live painting demonstrations, concerts, bluegrass after party, raffles, and a pie eating contest.  I think I will attend the convention next year, not for the tattoos, but for the pie!

Snow Mountain on the First Day of Spring

On the first day of spring it looked like Snow Mountain ski area was done for this season as can be seen in this picture from March 21st.  However, after yesterday's fresh foot of snow the skiers and snowboarders are back in business!

Old Boat With the Winter Blues

This old boat with the winter blues may have been heartened to see the ice receding on this Pocono Mountains lake.  However, its dreams of early spring boating have been torpedoed by yet another storm that has brought a foot of snow today and sunk temperatures back into the 20's.

Dragon King and Lord of Wisdom Masks

These are images of The Dragon King and the Lord of Wisdom, two masks that were on display at the 2011 tattoo convention.  Dragons are a popular tattoo subject, and these masks certainly provide some inspiration.   Dragons are quite significant in Chinese and Japanese mythology, and some fascinating pictures and interesting text can be seen here.

Original Art Samples at the Electric City Tattoo Convention

In addition to the actual tattooing going on at the Scranton Tattoo Convention, there was striking artwork on exhibit.

The Electric City Tattoo Convention

A Conventioneer

Today was the final day of the second annual Electric City Tattoo Convention.  Tattoos are not my thing, but they are very popular in Northeast Pennsylvania and quite a few tattoo artists and shops seem to be thriving.   Since I was passing by the hotel I had to pop in for a quick look around.

Late Winter in the Poconos

A clear sign that it is late winter  in the Pocono Mountains is when the ice begins to break up on lakes and streams.

Nature Love's Her Little Surprises

So I'm driving down a city street in an urban state of mind when I come around the corner, and boom!  To borrow some words from Joe Walsh, "It comes without warning, nature loves her little surprises."  This Shrek billboard promoting U.S. forests brought a big smile to my face and shifted my thoughts to a Pocono Mountains state of mind.  (Much better than an urban state of mind.)

Dirty Snow

Temperatures in northeast Pennsylvania are soaring into the 40's!  The days are getting warmer and that is nice, but the flip side of late winter and early spring is dirty snow and plenty of mud.

Shiny Domes in the Distance

These golden church domes make a bright contrast to cold and bleak winter days.

Get Your Java

This sign at a downtown Scranton parking garage is an effective attention getter because it hooks your curiosity.  You can't read it immediately, so you have to tilt your head and give it real attention to find out what it says.  So, get in your car and drive straight to the Center Street Coffeehouse and live large on Java!

Let the Sun Shine!

The sun returns to the Pocono Mountains (along with a high temperature below freezing).

Sambuca Grill Bar

I have not had the opportunity to appreciate the gourmet Italian dining at downtown Scranton's Sambuca Grill Bar, but I do get to appreciate the splash of color and un-Northeastern Pennsylvania  look of this restaurant every time I pass by.

Pocono Mountains Rider

The City Daily Photo theme day for March is "Your Favorite Part of Town."  For me, anywhere in the Pocono Mountains while on the back of my bike is my favorite.  Not quite in town, but it is not too much of a stretch to think of the Pocono Mountains as a really big suburb of Scranton
