Tuck's In Downtown Scranton

Some call this mural street art, some call it graffiti.  Whatever, it definitely brings some color to downtown Scranton.

The Perpetual Paper Peruser #2

It just seems right to photograph a statue of a newspaper editor and publisher in grainy black and white.

The Ice Captain

This big carved ice cube reminds me of The Captain from the 60's T.V. show The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.  The show was about a writer, played by Hope Lange, living in a big coastal house haunted by a cranky ghost of a sea captain, played by Edward Muhare.   The series was based on a book by R.A. Dick, and it was preceded by a film in 1947 starring Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison.  While the show only lasted for two years, it did have a light and pleasant charm to it which managed to keep it planted in my memory for forty years to be easily dislodged by this ice sculpture.  For the curious, the nostalgic, and classic film buffs, the movie and the show are available on DVD.

Festival of Ice in Clark's Summit

Time for the Clark's Summit Festival of Ice.  This year it marked the 100th anniversary of the borough that borders Scranton on the west side of the city.  Ice sculptures were sponsored by various businesses and were on display in front of numerous shops along the main street running through the center of town.

The Pigeonator

"Hasta la vista, birdy."  There will be no pigeons poopin' on people passing under this ledge!  The Pigeonator is always on the job, keeping customers safe and sanitary.

Subaru as Sign

This Nordica Subaru is a regular rolling neon sign that shouts out, "Look at me!"   I think it is a refreshing counterpoint to all of the drab colored vehicles droning down our roads.

Billboard Bus

Regardless of the picture on this bus-as-billboard depicting the classic plumber's pose, anyone willing to wield some hand tools can benefit from cheap auto parts at Harry's U-Pull-It.

Sled Dogs and Snowmobiles

If snowmobiling is not your thing, dog sled rides and tours are also a popular activity in the Pocono Mountains.

Snowmobiles in the Poconos

Snowmobiles are usually available at Pocono Manor every day when there is enough snow on the ground for the machines to go.  Snowmobiling is a winter tradition for may people in the Pocono Mountains.  Click here for more snowmobile pictures.

Snowmobiles at Pocono Manor

The golf course at Pocono Manor in the heart of the Pocono Mountains is another location for renting snowmobiles.  The snowmobile route at Pocono Manor follows the golf course through scenic woods.  May as well put those frozen fairways to use for February fun!

Pocono Manor Winter Madrugada

This image was taken at Pocono Manor in the heart of the Pocono Mountains, about a twenty minutes drive from Scranton.  The Portuguese word "madrugada" has multiple interpretations with the simplest being "dawn".  Other interpretations include the magical hour before dawn, and the deepest and darkest part of the night before the coming of dawn.  I like to think that this picture, taken in early February, catches the mood of the deepest and darkest part of the winter before the coming of spring.

Snowy So No-y U-Turn Today

There will be no u-turn today on this Pocono Mountains road.  Tomorrow, maybe.  The additional 5-6 inches of snow forecast for today fizzled into rain.

Snow Removal Can Be Fun!

Using an ATV with a snow plow blade for snow removal can make the job quite fun.  It sure beats shoveling the sidewalks!

Storm Cleanup

There's a whole lotta shoveling going on after our most recent storm.

Last night's storm brought almost two inches of ice to the Pocono Mountains region.  This morning, after cracking open the driver's side door to my car,  I lowered the passenger window and got a good look from the inside of the ice encasing it.
