The cities of Scranton and Wilkes-Barre are bookends of the metropolitan area that runs through and connects the Lackawanna and Wyoming valleys. The two cities are figuratively joined at the hip and share much in common, including an airport and professional hockey and baseball teams. More significant, both cities and the entire metropolitan area sit atop a vast honeycomb of anthracite coal mines that is the foundation of the areas heritage.
